About the event

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, marks a pivotal moment in American history, commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. Its significance lies in the fact that it represents the day in 1865 when Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of the Civil War and the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued by President Abraham Lincoln two years earlier. Despite the proclamation, many enslaved individuals remained unaware of their freedom until this announcement, highlighting the delayed implementation of emancipation in certain regions. Over the years, Juneteenth has evolved from a local celebration into a national holiday, officially recognized in 2021, symbolizing African American resilience, culture, and the ongoing struggle for equality and justice in the United States.
